The days are drawing near that we will finally meet our baby boy, Rhett.

We received word today that the day is sooner than expected so we are mere days, perhaps hours of embarking in this new and exciting chapter in our life. I am so incredibly blessed to have such a wonderful and supportive family, group of friends and loving husband. Going on 6 years married, 9 years together - we couldn't be more excited about this new journey. Our little family is about to grow and completely change for the better. We know it will be hard, we know it will be challenging, but we also know how incredibly rewarding it will be to hold this precious child in our arms. Please keep us in your prayers as we welcome Rhett into our world. Until February, emma j design will be closed so that I can focus on this new delivery. I hope you enjoy the holiday season and I look forward to working with you in 2012!

Our custom Christmas Cards!

I wanted to do something simple yet fun this year for our holiday cards since we will soon be sending out Rhett's beautiful letterpress birth announcements. My wonderful friend, Sarah Buck from Sarah Buck Photography, photographed us with baby bump and so we featured one of our favorite shots on the front. Of course, Dallas and Bailey had to adorn the back along with a special present wrapped for Rhett. I mailed them in charcoal grey envelopes with red liners and addressed them in white. Enjoy!

We've been hard at work on baby Rhett's nursery! I can officially say that we are finally finished - just days away from our little delivery making his appearance into the world! We have poured our heart and soul into creating an inspirational environment for this little guy and hope he grows to love his room as much as we do. We both wanted a room that wasn't too babyish or themey, but yet sophisticated, timeliness and full of unique touches only his room would have above all others.

Lots of credit goes to the loved ones that made such beautiful pieces for the room and the hard work of The Classy Crib for the bedding. Photos are below with brief descriptions about our choice on song lyrics, quotes and sentimental items throughout the room. We hope you love it!

I've been working closely with the ladies at Piece of Cake out of Atlanta, Georgia. LOVE their cakes! I was a frequent customer when I worked downtown a few years ago. They approached me a couple of years ago to redesign their website and reinvent their brand. I used their existing precious logo to create a brand new design which we are still growing today! They ship their cakes and treats straight to your door - great for the holidays and birthdays all year round!

What a beautiful day this turned out to be! Or should I say, beautiful 3-day event celebrating the marriage of Deanna and Joe. The fabulous event was designed and coordinated by Sebrell Smith Designer Events and photographed by the talented Chia and Hon along with Bryan Stovall. I have had the pleasure of working with two clients recently who adore letterpress stationery - the ultimate luxury!

For Heather, I commissioned local calligrapher, Bride Whelan, to hand letter her name in a beautiful script in Heather's signature blue color. Heather's stationery was printed on 220lb Crane Lettra - super textured and thick. Both are beautiful in person and I know they are excited about putting them to use!

For Andrea, we letterpressed her custom wedding monogram in metallic gold on ecru 160lb cardstock.

I'm feeling so blessed these days being surrounded by love for this little man inside of me. Not only have my friends and family come together to throw us the most amazing baby showers, but my wonderful husband has just gone above and beyond to help me through this journey. I am thankful for our new home that has lots of room to grow and build our family. I am thankful for my loving mother who gives me words of wisdom everyday as I grow to understand her love for me as I become a mother myself. I am thankful for my wonderful business and the ability to make my dreams come true. I am often reminded of a pinterest favorite. I did for sure. After this bundle of joy arrives, I will be figuring out the ropes of being a working mother. Wish me luck! I am thankful for my husband who motivates me everyday in my personal life and professional life. He has never discouraged me and has always listened to my struggles and bumps along the way. After 5 1/2 years of marriage - I could not ask for more. Today, I am thankful for the 2 handmade CDs of lullaby music sent from my childhood dentist. Since I have relocated to Savannah, I no longer get to see his smiling face every 6 months. He hasn't forgotten about little ole' me because he sent the most precious gift for Rhett. His hobby of growing his music collection has paid off and we have the most wonderful collection of eclectic music to play in the nursery. Pandora was traded for lullabies today in the office and this gem played recently. I love this song to pieces and it's been years since I heard it on my playlist. In typical artist fashion, I found it necessary to design yet another piece of artwork for the nursery.

I am also thankful for my bible study group. One of the girls just recently emailed us this quote and I found it so inspiring. This now sits in our bedroom as we start and end each day.

My Grandmother Lillian's famous quote:

In honor of Mr. Giraffe in the nursery, I scoured through all of my favorite Frank songs to find this rare gem. Ironically, this song was written within a month of Patrick and I being born in 1981.

Loved this find from Pinterest - I reworked the quote to incorporate Rhett's signature pattern.

My daddy and I danced to Moon River on my wedding day so I found this was fitting. Johnny Mercer is from Savannah and I grew up playing the piano out of my mom's old Mancini piano book.

Introducing 'pouf' - Designer handmade pillows made in South Georgia. One of my favorite all-time clients contacting me to develop a brand for her new line of ultra chic and designer pillows. Of course I will be one of her first customers - cannot WAIT to see what she comes up with! Her colorful and chipper personality shows through with the choice of bold orange while showing her sophisticated tastes with the addition of the chocolate brown - Think Hermes. We worked on just the right font and even make a few adjustments so we have a one-of-a-kind look for pouf. Round business cards complete the ensemble and will grace the pillows on display. Personalized Letterpress Stationery for me!

It's about time! Time for me to finally design and decide on my own letterpress stationery. I just received a beautiful package of custom letterpressed stationery from my wonderful printer (Fireside Printing) and I could not be more thrilled with the results. The wardrobe is 2 pieces: A7 Flat Notes with a fretwork board and EM interlocking letters in addition to a small 4Bar Flat Card with my name in calligraphy by the talented Bride Whelan. I plan to use the larger cards for longer notes and correspondence and the smaller cards for quick notes and enclosure cards. We printed the wardrobe in my signature seaglass blue color on 220lb double weight Crane Lettra. custom fabric design for Rhett's Nursery

Rhett Patrick McCarthy. That's the name of my future (probably redheaded) southern gentleman. Yes, it's true, 23 weeks and counting to our Christmas delivery. We are over the moon excited for this little bundle of joy to arrive!

I've been toying around with multiple options for my husband and I to decide on for the nursery. You have to imagine trying to mix geometric modern with traditional outdoors- that's us. In an attempt to compromise somewhere in the middle, I have proposed two different patterns to my hubby to make the final decision. We have scoured the internet and local shops looking for a bedding option we love and no luck of the irish here. I finally decided that it would be strange to use a fabric I did not design myself - what kind of designer would I be? To the computer I went and designed the patterns below.

We have an old cross stitch of the Irish blessing which has the light blue and touches of Irish green in addition to the desire to have an accent wall covered in Savannah River Maps (excuse the mockup below). Feel free to visit my pinterest board here for some of the inspirational photos. This is not exactly the end result of course, but something to work from at least. The window treatments and light fixture have been ordered from RHBaby&Child setting the color palette of Silver Sage/Seafoam and Irish Bright Green. I'm adding an inset white chippendale border to the valances on the window treatments. For the walls, we plan to choose individual song lyrics that we love, inspirational quotes, cameos of our own baby portraits and vintage photos from our families. In addition, I plan to watercolor 4 prints (How to Tie a Bowtie like a Gentleman, How to Throw a Curve Ball like Daddy, How to Shag like my Parents, How to Tie a Square Knot like a good Fisherman). These will adorn the walls and be something he can use in his room for years to come.

We are so grateful to have my talented father-in-law who is making a beautiful handmade crib out of Caribbean Rosewood - can't wait to see this beauty! The white dresser is an original from my grandparents house in which the hubby has applied a whitewashed finish.

Their invitations have been signed, sealed and delivered to their lucky guests so I'm happy to share the final product! Jen and Michael wanted a design that was representative of The Ford Plantation as well as the southern accent of magnolia flowers. We created a custom letterpressed folder and completed with 100% cotton Crane 220lb thickness paper for the wedding invitations and response cards. We also designed a special events card to communicate the weekend activities. Jen also wanted a coordinating thank you note card to use for wedding gifts. Enjoy!

I had the honor of designing Abigail's beautiful and stunningly elegant wedding invitations! Abigail wanted traditional but with a twist. She fell in love with Crane's blush pink paper - made popular by the Martha Stewart Wedding Collection. Abigail's love of paper turned into a one-of-a-kind work of art designed by myself and calligrapher, Bride Whelan with assistance of La Paperie. Bride developed the hand-written wording, while I concentrated on the custom wedding monogram that adorned the top of the A9 invitation with rounded edges. The artwork was engraved with gold ink and the ecru envelopes were lined in lustre gold.

Oversized Wedding Seating Charts

Keeping up with the trends is all a part of the wedding business. I'm constantly inspired by my brides - they are always coming up with new ideas and inquiring about "Can you design...". Anything is possible! Recently, I've had a few brides approach me about oversized seating charts in lieu of escort cards. This concept is very green and forces guests to interact and break the ice while waiting on their bride and groom to arrive at the reception. Seating charts can be designed in any format, size and color scheme.

Leigh wanted a guest list representative of her wedding invitations by emma j design. We incorporated her wedding monogram and created a master list of guests' names in alphabetically order. She placed the mounted seating chart in a beautiful frame and allowed her guests to find their names and table assignment.

While working with First City Events, Bonnie approached me on behalf of bride, Jessica. Her room layout was remnant of downtown Savannah and the squares. We designed a room layout/guest list table assignment combo so guests would know where to find their table. Jessica wanted the seating chart to represent the Savannah squares so we added touches like the oak trees and square dividers.

I attended a monogram shower for my friend, Summer. She is so excited to be getting married and part of that is celebrating her new name! Brooke and I joined forces and created a unique basket of monogrammed items including double-sided flat baby blue stationery with her new initials on one side and her new name on the other. Also included were calling cards for gift giving with the couple's combined monogram. To top it off, we did monogrammed cocktail napkins to use for entertaining.

I just love how her vintage monogrammed turned out on the blue rugby stripes.

Danielle and Ryan wanted a wedding invitation with a vintage garden theme using two love birds. We printed their custom design on Crane 100% Cotton paper with 2-color letterpress (marigold yellow and light taupe). We completed the look with gold calligraphy by Bride Whelan.

Stevie wanting something that represented a southern-Savannah soiree so we used her color palette of coral and gold to design a custom invitation wardrobe complete with the invitation, gold envelopes with custom liners, reply card and envelope. She also opted to order coordinating die-cut stationery with their wedding monogram on one side for wedding thank you notes - so beautiful! We printed the invitations on a shimmer paper so they just sparkle in person! We completed the invitation with white calligraphy from Bride Whelan.

One of my best friends from childhood got engaged over the weekend and we've already begun the preparations for her wedding! She hopes to secure a location for an August wedding and has her eyes set on a vintage barn setting that has been renovated for weddings in Rome, Georgia. The alter is complete with old church pews for guests. So beautiful! She's a really stylish gal and loves the idea of using a fuchsia and turquoise color scheme - which I love! Since her fiance is an avid outdoorsman, she still wants to incorporate rustic details for his style as well. Think bright purple/fuchsia bridesmaids dresses with chunky turquoise necklaces! Here's a quick inspiration board we came up with incorporating all of the colors, details and energy of the event. I can't wait to work on her paper products using the spode-rose border from Corrie's quail invitations, vintage monogram and bright jewel tones! Stay tuned for more details to come!

My favorite quote of all time and compliments of my nana, Lillian.

Often times in my life, I have worried about making big decisions, sweated the unknown and contemplated making the right decision. While my nana was still alive, she would often remind me not to worry because everything always worked out the way it was supposed to. God has a bigger plan than any of us can even imagine and it's important to remember that we have no control over our lives. Yes, we can make the conscious effort to make the right decisions but in the end, it's not up to us. She always said "What's for you won't pass you by." Now, it's up to my mom and my husband to remind me of this quote in times of decision making and worrying... and, I have to admit, once I make a decision, I hardly look back and look to the future with excitement and motivation. I've been reminded of nana when deciding to leave a steady full-time job and to pursue my freelance career (emma j design), choosing my loving husband and life in Savannah, choosing the right time to start a family based on what WE want, not what everyone else wants, and the daily dilemmas of owning a business and juggling the daily responsibilities of a wife, daughter and friend. Nana was the one who believed in my artistic abilities the most and often pushed me to create more, build my portfolio and remain confident in my work. I find myself saying this quote to friends when they are in similar situations - I believe it gives you a sense of calm and confidence that everything ALWAYS works out in the end. It's impossible to see the end in the beginning, so you just have to live your life to the fullest everyday and know there is always light at the end of the tunnel - whether you can see it yet or not. Pass on this quote in your blog or in your next conversation with a friend. Hopefully, you will find peace in it just as I have over the years. Enjoy!

St. Patrick's Day in Savannah

For our family, it's not about green beer and beads, it's about tradition, heritage and making memories. The McCarthy St. Patrick's Day begins with attending the Irish Heritage Dance, then Walter Crawford's (this year's Grand Marshall) party at the Knights of Columbus, followed by Patrick's attendance to the Fenian Irish Society Breakfast, putting together the family float and walking in the parade with the other Irish families in Savannah. We complete the date with a family lunch and then meeting our friends afterwards! This year will be a little special due to the recent loss of Patrick's Uncle Mike, but I will remember him well while putting together the huge bows for the float which was always his specialty! Hopefully I will honor him well!

Pink and Green Baby Shower

I had the delight of hosting a baby shower for my friend, Brandy! Along with the help of 2 other hostesses, we were able to pull together quite a fabulous soiree if I have to say so myself! Starting with the invitations, we set the tone with pink and green hues with a vintage feel. For the shower, we used the same palette and threw in a little Lilly Pulitzer with the tablecloth and attire! We completed the event with a Mimosa Station, Sweets Station with the help of Custom Cakes, delicious food and paper accents from emma j design. Enjoy!

So it's that time of year and I'm so thankful to be able to spend some quality time reflecting on the holidays this year and selecting the perfect gifts for each person on my list! In past years, my holiday season as been filled with sending email blasts everyday, traveling up and down I16 to Atlanta and working on catalog after catalog. Thank goodness those days are over and although I'm grateful for the experience, I'm kind of glad they are over. I was looking forward to this year so I could finish my list in plenty of time, knock out some baking and trim the tree in style. Just to recap a few things from this month:

Decking the Halls

Here are a few snapshots of my home this Christmas. We didn't break out the Dept. 56 Snow Village this year due to space and I don't want to overwhelm any potential buyers of our home. My hubby's mom started a collection for each of her three children so we have an entire city full of glowing buildings, miniature storefronts, a bakery, an ice skating pond, church and even a tree house that lights up - I just adore it! Each child received a new addition every year of their life.

Time to reveal my personal Christmas card for this year! As some of you know, I'm constantly inspired by fabrics seen in fashion and home decor. I have a few pieces from this collection of Tory Burch which I love and is still my favorite pattern she's ever released. You can see the dress in my photo above! :) This year, I wanted our holiday card to be something funky and unexpected so I chose to use the fabric as inspiration! The photo on the front was shot by my sweet mom and we were able to get a great photo of Dallas and Bailey for the inside! The cards were completed with red envelopes, custom chevron liners and calligraphy by yours truly. Enjoy and happy holidays!

I'm thrilled to be finalizing the final collections for the spring release of Twist Paper! I'm been so inspired by home decor, bold fabrics, savvy typography and interesting color combinations. I can't explain how lucky I feel from the success of Twist this year. A big thanks to the peeps over at Whitney English for bringing my visions to life and handling my customers with such grace! I couldn't ask for better representation!

It's interesting to see how much life can change in a year. It seems like ages ago now, but it was just in January that I decided to leave Swoozie's as their Senior Designer to pursue emma j design full-time. It's been the most satisfying venture thus far and I can't believe it too me so long to make the step! It was a huge door to close, but opened up many more doors of opportunity. As a designer, it's been so rewarding to guide my own creative journey without being watered down by other opinions and limitations. It is great to see how much one can excel without being held back. I'm such a lucky girl to see how much the nation has embraced Twist Paper. Ironically and thankfully, my presence remains in Swoozie's since they carry Twist Paper and many of the other products I design for Buckhead Betties and Peking Handicraft (Twist Party in-stores Spring 2011). Thank you!

Letterpress Business Cards { Azelle Photography }

I have had the pleasure of working with photography duo and oh-so-cute couple, Azelle Photography, to refine their brand and develop new marketing material. We started by just making some slight revisions to their existing logo like using a thinner and more feminine font while adding a touch of parisian ironwork below with the tagline. Next, we moved onto their marketing packet to present to brides that includes information/pricing cards, samples of their work and bios. The latest project was the business card design. They really wanted to push the envelope with a letterpress printed card along with creating a custom pattern of their logo elements to blind deboss in the background. Letterpress Sneak Peak: Spode-Inspired Rustic Fall Wedding Invitations

I've been hard at work designing the wedding paper wardrobe for this upcoming fall wedding. The bride was inspired by her brown Spode Woodland china. We completed the look with a victorian monogram with male and female quails atop each letter. She's glamming up the look at the wedding with feathers and jewel tones. Here's a sneak peek of the wedding invitation printed in brown letterpress on Crane ecru lettre. I have the pleasure of having such great friends here in Savannah! One of them is expecting a new little bundle of joy, Baby Liam!!! Now there is one thing I LOVE doing and that's hosting showers! All of us rolled up our sleeves and got to work on this fabulous jungle-themed shower for Jami! Her nursery is Jungle friends from Pottery Barn so we only thought this was appropriate! After a couple of weeks of the hubby's growing honey-do list, we were able to make some of the decor changes to the house in time!

I just discovered shoes from DVF at BleuBelle Boutique and you wouldn't believe the comfort level. As much as I love a Tory Burch shoe, I have to say these blow her out of the water comfort-wise. I have this one in black and I could run a marathon in them! Leave it to DVF to create a shoe made for the woman's body - that is what she's famous for - hello, the wrap dress of all things!

Many of you might recognize this dress in white on the cover of the SATC2 Posters on Sarah Jessica Parker. I recently splurged on the cornflower blue version and wow - it's a stunner in person! Dress by Halston Heritage, purchased at BleuBelle Boutique.

Ordered this from kate spade and let me just tell you that the quality and craftsmanship is impeccable. Definitely worse the price tag if you plan wearing it for years to come.

Two Smart Cookies : Come see me Friday!

Our local Savannah bakery called Two Smart Cookies started Smart Fridays in the summer. Every Friday, owners, Amanda and Annette, ask a local artist to feature their work inside the bakery in their fabulous gift shop. They contacted me a few weeks ago and I'll be there tomorrow! Please stop by to say hello and to grab a few of their oh-so-famous iced sugar cookies. They are a perfect fit for shower favors, new home owners, birthday parties, wedding favors and more! A lot of my clients have taken their custom invitation and had Two Smart Cookies design a custom matching cookie for their event! The gift shop also has the most unique jewelry, home decor and accessories. Stop by between 11 and 1 to say hi! I'll be showcasing Twist Paper line which will be available for purchase at La Paperie (locally) and stores nationwide.

Interior Design-inspired Save the Date : Preppy + Pink + Navy + Green {Cumberland Island, Georgia}

The sweetest bride-to-be EVER contacted me after working with BleuBelle Bridal here in Savannah. She's a wonderful interior designer and owns Mix : Art and Interiors in St. Simons Island, Georgia. She had a swatch of vintage Waverly green/white fabric that she's using for table linens. We used this fabric for inspiration for her save the date while incorporating pink and navy from a table scape she loved. She also wanted to incorporate a monogram/crest of some kind, but was a little hesitant since her initial is B and the groom's is J. You can only imagine why! I love a challenge! I created the logo below which graced the cover of her tri-fold save the date and will be incorporated in her private ceremony invitations and hometown reception invitations. She's also embroidering linens to use at the wedding! We'll also be working on favor tags, hotel room baskets, menu cards and placecard. I think I see a published wedding in the future! Talk about branding outside the box - I love it!

Crown-Themed Wedding Invitations in Letterpress { Savannah, Georgia }

I was so excited to work on this wedding invitation with Savannah wedding planner, Tricia Huddas! The couple wanted a sense of royalty for their invitations, so we combined the crown and vintage monogram with their initials. I think they turned out fabulously! Printed on cream 100% cotton Crane paper in Gold Letterpress.

Loving the way this order turned out for a sweet couple getting married at the Mansion on Forsyth Park here in Savannah. the living room changes begin!

So we're well on our way to our new and improved living room! We finally painted the color below and are about to place our order for the Madeline Weinrib rug below, the Fabricut black and white fabric for the windows, our couch arrived from www.24estyle.com and our Marimekko Black and White Pillows have arrived. Headed to www.numberfoureleven.com tomorrow to finalize the remainder of the items: Pillows, tables, lamps and more!

Also, super excited to order my own custom designed fabric from www.spoonflower.com. This will hang in the adjoining dining room with custom white and blue slipcovers from www.shopsatchel.com. The walls are red so it will combine the two rooms well!

So it was finally time for me to upgrade to letterpress business cards. We printed them letterpress with 2 colors on 160lb Crane cardstock. I'm so proud to be handing them out to potential clients - I'm receiving a lot of oooooooohs and ahhhhhhhs!

My talented designer friend, Kate, commissioned me to design artwork for 2 frames she bought for her apartment. She has a lot of brightly colored decor and fabrics from her trips abroad to India and China so she wanted something to reflect those colors. Here's how they turned out! Both pieces were designed with 1) the letters of her first name, katherine and 2) her initials KEM. Enjoy!

10 Year High School Reunion : EPHS

So we went to my 10 Year High School reunion this past weekend up in Atlanta. I attended East Paulding High School in Dallas, Georgia and it was SO great to see old friends and catch up. I think we could all agree that we were a little nervous to see who was attending. With my bad memory and all, I was certain I would go to introduce my hubby and completely forget their name! It's hard after 10 years because we all look a little more grown up, without seeing faces everyday, it's natural for some names to slip your mind. All in all, it was a great night!
